La Gomera - YOAS Yoga Retreats

Stargazing on La Gomera

I first visited the Finca on La Gomera about 5 years ago with YOAS.

It’s a little bit of a schlep to get to, but I can assure you the extra hours travelling make it all the more special. You can only get to La Gomera by boat so I usually spend the night before on Tenerife before I take the boat the next day.

The ferry is only a short hop but one that discourages many tourists, so La Gomera still has more of a quality of being a hidden gem. On arrival at the ferry port, you board a minibus or taxi to get to the other side of the island.

It’s a stunning journey where you wind your way up, up, up into the hills and into the rainforest. Beautiful views on the way. Then slowly you descend to the port near the Finca.

The first few times I went (and yes, I’ve been a few times, it’s not the sort of place you visit once) we then got into another vehicle to get to the Finca. Now you go by boat, (a less than 5 minute journey across the bay) which honestly adds another level of adventure to the experience!

The Finca is a corner of paradise. Partly due to the remoteness and also due to the commitment of the Finca community who live there to keep it a bit off the grid, making it a real retreat from everything.

The accommodation is lovely, super chilled, but it’s the setting that steals the show. You are immersed in the elements and nestled in the bosom of nature as it were! You can hear the sound of the sea all the time, the sun has shone for each one of my visits and the energy is super grounding.

If you like to swim in the sea its a beautiful place for swimming, either off the shore directly, or there are some more sandy beaches nearby, or 2 pools, a smaller heated one and a larger ‘fresher’ pool.

The yoga shala is a beautiful purpose-built space and all around the grounds, are the fruits and vegetables that the community grow, sustainable and permaculture crops.

I LOVE that there isn’t good 4G there, or Wifi readily available. It feels really good to have a proper switch off, but don’t worry for those of you who need to check in, you do get the occasional signal and the Finca have hotspots that they lend out OR a space you can go and work in, IF you must!

One of the main attractions for me are the stars. At night the sky is a stunning and I love to lie on the sunloungers, barely any sky pollution and sky gaze, whilst listening to the sea.

Oh and I can’t forget to mention the food! The food is delicious and plentiful, vegetarian and really tasty and cooked with love and lots of fresh home-grown organic ingredients.

All enough to go for even without the yoga! I guarantee if you go once, you’ll be hooked.

Jess’s next retreat on La Gomera is from 25 June – 2 July 2022. You can see her upcoming retreats here.
