About 42 Acres

Set in 42 acres of private land, this beautiful retreat space is encircled by seven hundred acres of ancient forest. Sustainability and comfort are at the forefront of the 42 acres vision,  with reclaimed materials used to outfit the interiors of the property, plus all of the power is renewable and self generated through biomass and solar.

The daily programme

Flowing, traditional hatha yoga sessions will naturally open the heart and nurture you to a space of surrender and stillness. A typical class will include asana (postures), pranayama (breathing exercises), hands-on adjustments, guided relaxation, chanting and a taste of philosophy. Typically each class will last for 2 hours.

The retreat will begin on Friday at 5pm. We will gather, enjoy a grounding yoga class, a delicious vegetarian supper and introduction to the sweat lodge and native chants.

Saturday will begin with dawn ceremonies and chanting, followed by yoga. The rest of the day will be spent preparing for the sweat lodge, at dusk we will begin the sweat lodge ceremony after which we will enjoy a healthy feast supper.

On Sunday we will have a dawn ceremony, meditation, chanting and yoga. The retreat will end at 3pm on Sunday.

The sweat lodge

The sweat lodge is an ancient native ceremony which has been used since time immemorial for purification of body, mind and emotions.

It helps to reconnect with the earth and to awaken old memories and connection with nature wisdom by using the four elements.

It is considered by native people as the song of the Earth. It has been an element in ceremonies for many different tribal communities all over the world (south America, north America, Europe, Scandinavia, Mongolia to name just a view).

During the lodge ceremony the lodge keeper calls on the wisdom inspired by the 4 direction to guide visualization, chants, prayers, set intentions and reflection for all participants. In a safe and gentle environment you will have the opportunity to leave the old behind and direct energy and intention to the new.

A sweat lodge is a covered round structure made from wood. Stones are heated in a fire and placed in a hole in the middle of the lodge to creative a sweat lodge; a natural sauna.

Accommodation

Accommodation options range from dormitories to twin and single rooms (en-suite options available) with luxury linen and towels provided. The centre has several communal spaces including a library and a meeting and reading space.

Delicious organic food will be served throughout the retreat. All meals are vegetarian.

Comments

42 Acres is a truly magical retreat: a sacred space of calm and peacefulness set in the restorative nature of Somerset...
42 Acres is a magical haven. The unintrusively cool interior design is in a league of its own and absolutely bang up to date, and yet, this beautiful home still retains its connection to the past. The setting is 42 acres of glorious nature, gorgeous English farmland, bounded by ancient meadows and forests. I experienced one of the most magical weekends at 42 acres and this place will forever be in my heart. I can't recommend it enough.
The house is beautifully appointed and has very comfortable luxurious rooms, the perfect place to get away from the stresses of everyday life and find some well needed peace. I will definitely be going back soon.
I am still feeling the positive effects from my break. The location was beautiful, the food fantastic, the people lovely and Dory, by far, is the best teacher I have had in 18 years...
I really enjoyed it all and found the space and quiet I needed ! Doing so much yoga was great! You are both so gifted at facilitating...so nurturing and calm. A joy!
‘I cannot thank you enough for such a wonderful retreat at 42 Acres, I had such a lovely, peaceful time. Everything was absolutely wonderful: the food, the location, the classes, the massages and the people. I left feeling thoroughly rejuvenated and really inspired to explore yoga more.’
Alice
I really enjoyed it and I have to say that it was largely down to the skill of your facilitation and how well you work together. You both so clearly put happiness on the map from the beginning and it filtered through. Everyone relaxed and smiled! I loved the gentle humour too. I also appreciated all the hard work behind the scenes and your attention to detail. You were both so generous and thoughtful.
